Long-term memories frequently exist independently of conscious thought. Although most of this knowledge is not conscious, it can be brought to working memory and used as needed. Some memories are very easy to recollect, while others are more tougher to access.
According to the information-processing model of memory, the human memory is very similar to a computer. Similar to how data is saved on a computer's hard drive, information is first stored temporarily in short-term memory before some of it is moved to long-term memory, which is a relatively permanent repository.
