The combat lasted five weeks, from December 16, 1944, to January 28, 1945, near the conclusion of the war in Europe. It took off through the highly wooded Ardennes area of Belgium and Luxembourg.
It coincided with the Alsace Offensive and, later, the Colmar Pocket, a series of engagements undertaken by the Germans in support of the Ardennes assault. The principal military goals were to deny the Allies further use of the Belgian port of Antwerp and to separate the Allied lines, which may have allowed the Germans to surround and destroy the four Allied armies.
