In Easley v Cromartie the argument was that establishing the borders for voting violated the equal protection clause of the constitution. The United States Supreme Court ruled that the lower court's ruling was incorrect because it genuinely relied on racial issues, which is against the interests of the state. In Shaw v. Reno, the court found that North Carolina's voting strategy attempted to separate voters based on race.
